Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success. – Thomas J. Watson

Applying Practical Creativity to Career Direction and Job Search –with Kendall DudleyWHEN: Wednesday,October 24, 2012, 6:00 – 7:30 pm
WHERE: Career Source, 186 Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge, MA, 3rd Floor, in the Fresh Pond Shopping Center, a short walk from the Alewife T Station. Join us for networking, refreshments and Boston’s best career trainers.

Many of us don’t see the options for choosing career and finding work that may be lying in plain sight.  We’ve been “trained” to see work in ways that excludes vital information from our thinking. If you’re willing to question a few of your basic ideas about work, open your mind to what’s possible, and take a few creative risks, this program will jazz up your thinking about what’s possible and how to get there. You’ll look behind the scenes of your own decision-making process and see 4 vital perspectives commonly omitted from conversations on work. You will come away with new ways to talk about work, and the tools for drafting an updated vision that has a direct impact on your job search. Bring samples of your marketing materials and an object that represents a
strong interest.

You’ll learn:
• A new  set of key words to redefine yourself and others
• Tools & tips from other fields that will help your job search
• Ways to get noticed so you can be seen, heard and remembered
• Tips for staying focused and alert to less-obvious opportunities

Presenter:  Kendall Dudley graduated from the Wharton School and Columbia University, and over the years has added counseling, teaching, writing, painting and travel to his work portfolio. As a consultant for Lifeworks Career & Life Design in Belmont, he sees private clients and presents at National Career Development Association conferences, teaches, leads life transition trips to Morocco, and serves as program chair for the Life Planning Network of New England. Kendall worked in Iran for 2 years, a life-changing event. You can contact Kendall at 781-640-9957/lifeworksdesign@verizon.net / http://www.kendalldudley.com.

The New Job Security  with author Pam Lassiter
Nov 1, 9-11, Weston, MA

A special event with Pam Lassiter, author of The New Job Security iis being offered by HRLF’s Career Transition Group. Career Curve Balls – Dealing with the Unexpected in Job Transitions Thursday, November 1 9:00a.m. – 11:00a.m. Weston Golf Club RSVP: brynakaufman@gmail.com

Sometimes life pitches you a curve ball. Whether you bat a home run off of it or strike out is often within your control…without your knowing it. Now is the time to anticipate those curves and practice your swing. Pam’s sound practical advice will help you improve your batting average. Pam Lassiter, President of the global career management firm, Lassiter Consulting, has been working with professionals in transition for over 30 years and knows the best swing for every pitch. As author of The New Job Security – the 5 Best Strategies for Taking Control of Your Career, she interviewed thought leaders in career management from across the country. She combines their wisdom with her own unique approach to give the job seeker more control than you ever thought possible.

Her approach places job security right into your own hands. She’ll discuss ways to… • Create work during economic uncertainty • Increase the response rate to your calls and emails • “Close” the sale in getting the next meeting or offer • Develop a Plan B while Plan A is still active These strategies are not just for those in transition (which is inevitable), they’re ones that you’ll want to have when you want to grow within your companies, and even into retirement. They’re all about managing change. Curve balls can be a welcomed change when you take charge and put creative strategies to work for you. If you’re not familiar with Pam, check out our interview with her on Career Tips & Trends- http://www.careertipsandtrends.com/018-pam-lassiter-the-new-job-security.

Summer Schedule Transitions St. Ignatius (near Boston College)
From Cathy:

We will cut back this summer in 2012 just as we did in other years. The new dates are listed below, but Frank has come up with some ideas that we are planning to concentrate on for each meeting.

July 11 (Wednesday) –Elevator Pitch and 3 Minute Pitch July 26 (Notice that this is a Thursday. Both Frank and I are unavailable on the 25th.) —Accomplishment Analysis Exercise

August 8–Networking Meeting–What to do in a networking meeting where the attendees are unfamiliar August 22—Interviewing Practice

We hope to stick to this list of topics – however, we are flexible. Just today, people were discussing difficulties with “Focus and Follow through” – a great topic.

So, we are still riding a wave and sometimes, we have to zig instead of zag.

Sign Up for the TOD Now

The Target Opportunities Directory (TOD) is for us to help each other. You can submit information on what kind of work they seek along with your contact information. All participation is voluntary. If you register for the TOD, other members can help you find your target opportunity. It allows people with job leads to find and contact individuals interested in a potential position. We encourage all current and alumni members to participate.

A task force, made up of Transitions Members, put their heads together to develop the tool. We’re ready for you to try it out. Information from the form is entered onto a spreadsheet available to users.
